Herbal medicine

Herbal medicines are made exclusively from plants. Herbal medicine has been extensively practiced over the years and millions of people are using herbal medicines today. Scientific clinical trials have confirmed the therapeutic benefits of many herbal medicines which are used to improve health and to maintain health.
Medicinal herbs contain naturally occurring chemicals, which are called active constituents. Depending on the location of the active constituents in the plant, either the whole herb or a specific part is used. Some of the active constituents from plants are used to produce reliable pharmaceutical drugs. Just because herbs are natural, does not mean that all medicinal herbs can be used indiscriminately. With the exception of the best known herbs it is wise to always seek advice from your naturopath or herbalist before use.
Modern herbalists use safe remedies, of proven effectiveness, which slowly help restore the body's natural healing processes. The herbalist often will make up a bottle of several selected herbs which have a variety of actions that will assist with the patient's health issues. Knowledge of the correct application and combinations of medicinal herbs, is complex. It is the combination of the plants which lead to the success of the herbal practitioner.
In Australia, herbal products are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), part of the Federal Government. This is the same body and standard applied to pharmaceutical manufacturing. The herbalist generally purchases herbs in a tincture or extract form from a manufacturer that is regulated by these guidelines. A dispensary is then available to the practitioner to select a variety of herbs for the patient. Medicinal herbs may be made in a form of teas, tablets, capsules, extracts, tinctures and/or essential oils.
Herbalists aim to try to find the underlying cause of the condition, not just treat the symptoms. The patient's medical history, nutrition and life-style will be discussed in the consultation. It is best to take lab reports or medical documents whilst visiting the herbalist. The initial consultation may take 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours. Several shorter follow up sessions may be beneficial.
Physical, mental or emotional well-being can benefit from western herbal medicine. The herbalist typically believes that prevention of disease is as important as the treatment of an illness. Western Herbal Medicine is suitable for everyone, from children to the elderly.
